Archival Research can be super fascinating. Some of the work relates on personal levels and sometimes just on circumstances being the same. Archival research is great because it can have a ton of information that flows and connects with each other in some form, shape or fashion. When doing this research, it is important to ask questions to fully understand what can be seen because sometimes it can be confusing. That is where metadata comes in handy if the archive research is happening online or you are looking at a document. Metadata can provide all types of important information that can really be beneficial to helping a person analyze what is being seen whether its photographs, documents, or a video.
Andrew P Wood
For example, Andrew P Wood. He was a graphic designer and gay activist born in Atlanta Georgia. Andrew moved to San Francisco to attend art school and that is where he found and joined the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. This was a group of gay activists and they would dress up as nuns and performed for charity. Andrew Wood would dress as a nun named Sister Fulsom Delights as pictured above.
The image is a picture of Andrew Woods mugshot. Some questions that can be asked about this picture is “what is this?” which is obviously noticeable. It is a mugshot. Another question that can be answered by using this is “who is he? also “where did this happen?” which in this case the answers would be Andrew Wood and Atlanta Georgia. Below is a court summons where more questions can be answered thanks to archival research.
Another example would be this court summons. Some questions that can be asked about this is who is being summoned to court, why are they being summoned to court, when are they being summoned and where are they being summoned. Thanks to meta data and being able to do archival research, we know these answers. Andrew Wood was arrested for protesting. He was summoned in January on the ninth in Atlanta Georgia. The form has all the necessary information. It also has identifiers such as the court code and a number in the top right hand corner. Metadata is very important and really helps a lot with research, especially archival research. Everything has a connection in archival research because of the particular metadata.
“Silence= Death” shirt with a pink triangle and this phrase. There are many things one may think about when seeing this but what exactly does this mean? Researching into the name I found out that it was originally a symbol where homosexuals in the Nazi concentration camps were forced to wear inverted pink triangle badges as identifiers. This kind of relates to how jews had to wear the yellow star of David as an identifier. If a person happened to be wearing this pink triangle they were seen as the bottom and were treated so terribly and cruelly. They transformed the degrading symbol into one of power. One of gay pride and liberation.
Six gay activists in New York coined this phrase. They put posters around the city that had the image of the pink triangle with a black background with the phrase. It drew connections between the AIDS crisis and the Nazi period “declaring that silence about the oppression and annihilation of gay people, then and now, must be broken for our survival”. Since this phrase came about it has appeared in a huge variety of events.
Connection to the NAMES project
As I think about how I can connect this to the NAMES project, the first thing that pops out is the symbol. The symbol is one that is to represent gay pride and liberation. The quilt does the same thing. It is a symbol of pride and liberation and it memorializes those who have lost their lives due to the terrible HIV/AIDS virus. Another thing of course is the fact that each symbol relates back to homosexuals and the AIDS virus. My particular panel I chose relates on a personal level. My person from my panel was actually from New York where the six activists formed this phrase. These connections can be considered explicit and subtle.
Gabrielle details the entire panel in her post by going through and observing and describing the panel that she had chosen from top to bottom by asserting thick description of what she had seen. Williams engages in a detailed analysis of her panel by doing this process and backs it up with multimodal aspects, for example pictures of each and every part of the panel she is describing. She also researched further and found out that the quote on there actually referred to a song and she incorporated that song into her post. One audience for her assignment are individuals who have no idea what the the NAMES project is. Another audience could also be a person looking into making a panel for one of their loved ones. It can inspire others in many ways, even if it is just a person coming up with ideas for a panel or to help someone, like me, to understand thick description.
This inspires me to go deeper than deeper. I never even thought about describing the face in the picture on my panel. Describing the block of the quilt as a whole is also another thing. It can help to make readers more aware of what is going on as they read. Also doing so, spreads awareness.
Primary research and secondary research goes hand in hand when writing about a given subject. Primary sources or research is a first hand type of source. It is research that you personally collect yourself. It is collecting data from the real world and incorporating it into the assignment. An example of primary research is going out and finding a group of people to survey for a given subject. Another example would be conducting an interview for a given subject. Also observing first hand and taking detailed and thorough notes is primary research and also a very popular choice in my opinion. Secondary research or sources are second hand accounts. For example, finding information at a library or finding information online.
I actually conducted primary research where I had to sit and observe for a certain amount of time to write a paper for English 1101. That allowed me to write a paper that was more credible since I had first hand research. With my final project I feel it is majority primary research so that is most important. Secondary is also very important because it backs up the primary research in a way. For example, on my chosen panel there is a piano. Of course I can make the assumption that the piano was an important instrument to the late Randy Barnett, but without the letter, which would be considered a secondary source, that came along from his cousin, who also happened to be the one who created the panel for him, I would not have known how deep his love for playing the instrument had went. Also without the note, I would not have known who the man in the picture with him happened to be. I would not have known the story of how him and Michael met and fell in love.
The particular panel I chose has a blue background, with a hint of a faded blurred white in the center and little spots throughout. It is made of a simple cloth. There is not a border around this panel. The panel has Randy’s name across the top in yellow. Over the letter “R” is his name is a shooting star in the top left corner. Below his name is a big and slightly diagonal music note, a sixteenth note to be exact. The words “a life of music, books, and laughter” goes across the center of the panel. There appears to be a picture of Randy playing a piano above the piano on the right side of the panel. There is a picture of “Michael and Randy” in the bottom left corner of the panel. Around each picture in the panel is a gold border or frame. There was a letter that came with this panel.
Randys name across the top contrasts well with the blue background, and makes me wonder if his name is yellow to represent the sun in the blue sky? Is the blue background his sky? The simple cloth helps the different parts of the panel shine more. Is the shooting star a representation of what is thought of Randy. I wonder why the gold border around the pictures is the color that was chosen. I could tell Randy was a musician before reading the letter that was sent in with the panel. The piano and music note gave it away. Also before reading the letter, I was not aware of who Michael was. Michael happened to be the love of Randy’s life. He was Randy’s music teacher and they hit it off. Michael was there for Randy through everything. The “NY” in the bottom right corner made me assume he was from New York, which I was correct about. I am still unsure about the significance of the quote in the middle of the panel. I’m not sure if it is there for more decor or was it an important quote that Randy liked or something of that nature. Either way the quote flows lovely with the panel.
The background of the art is dark. There is a girl with a thin neck that fills the entire right side of the art. She is slightly turned as if she is looking back over her shoulder. She has on red lipstick. Her eyes are dark. The darkness illuminates her and makes her shine bright. There is a blue scarf wrapped around her head and then a yellowish one that flows as if it is hair. Her clothing is a rugged orange brown color. There is a pearl earring in the ear that is shown. The upper part of her body is shown, from a little bit below the shoulder up.
This is a piece of art called The Girl With the Pearl Earring. Honestly, I feel the earring is not shown off enough for that to be the name of this particular artwork. Her face is so bright that it makes the earring barely noticeable. That makes me wonder why that name for this art? Who inspired this name for the art? Who was the muse for the art? This makes me want to research further into this artwork. Vermeer did a great job with creating what seems like such a simple piece, but actually it is a mysterious piece that keeps the mind wondering.
This object was clear and square shaped. It was 3D . The thin side had a rugged side. This object opens up and can store a circular item. The outside of the object has a picture on it. The picture is one of an African American man. In the picture he is depicted with a black hat on the very front of the object. His eyes are closed, he has a beard, and he is facing sideways. On the back is the same exact man but he is wearing a white hat. The background is a light colored greenish and blue mixture on the front. And the background on the back is a darker mixture looking shade of greenish/blue. There is a list of words on the back with numbers in chronological order next to them on the left side. There is another list of numbers on the right side. These numbers are not in chronological order. They tell how long the material inside the object will play. The purpose of the object is recognizable. When asked what the object meant to Drew, he stated that he enjoys jazz music and he is also a jazz player. When asked where he retrieved the item from he said that he bought it off of Amazon. The very last question I asked what emotions does this object make him feel like when it is in his presence and he said happiness and passion and he begins to feel the urge to play his instrument.
